Kerala Voluntary Health Services has made a remarkable achievement in the field of Tobacco Control in Kerala by declaring Kottayam as the first Smoke Free district in India on 27th September 2008. The declaration covers Kottayam Town, 76 villages and 4 municipalities consisting of an over all population of 28 lakhs. We achieved this by the effort of last one year in association with the District Administration and the Department of Health and Family Welfare. A grant of 6 lakhs from VHAI under Bloomberg Global Initiative and an aid of 1.75 lakhs from American Cancer Society were utilized for this campaign. The technical input from “The Union” helped us a lot to complete the task effectively. This proves the strength of civil society to enforce the tobacco control among a large population. We fulfilled the objective through thousands of enthusiastic volunteers from all sections of population and building up a strong bond among different civil society groups. Also the three orders issued by the district administration helped us to achieve the task. The support from the Media and Trade union leadership was vital in this achievement. At this joyful moment we also realize the tough task ahead i.e. monitoring the violations of the declaration. But we are sure that our coalition is strong enough to face such challenges. We thank all of you for the valuable support.
